Biographie
Lampe a obtenu son doctorat de l' Université du Wisconsin-Madison en 1971.
Il a publié plusieurs livres ; son premier était Balkan Economic History, 1550-1950, From Imperial Borderlands to Developing Nations , avec Marvin Jackson, publié par Indiana University Press en 1982. Il a remporté le premier prix annuel Vucinich de l'Association américaine pour l'avancement des études slaves. . Il est également l'auteur de Balkans into Southeastern Europe and Yugoslavia as History: Twice There Was a Country , qui a été initialement publié en 1996 et a fait l'objet d'une deuxième édition en 2000.
Lampe a été directeur du programme d'études est-européennes au Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars . Il y est chercheur principal depuis 2007.
