Pam Cook (née le 6 janvier 1943) est professeur émérite de cinéma à l' université de Southampton . Elle a fait ses études à l'école Sir William Perkins , à Chertsey, à Surrey et à l'université de Birmingham , où elle a été enseignée par Stuart Hall , Richard Hoggart , Malcolm Bradbury et David Lodge . Avec Laura Mulvey et Claire Johnston , elle a été une pionnière de la théorie du cinéma féministe anglo-américaine des années 1970 . Sa collaboration avec Claire Johnston sur le travail de la réalisatrice hollywoodienne Dorothy Arzner a provoqué un débat parmi les spécialistes du cinéma féministe au cours des décennies suivantes.
Au milieu des années 1980, Cook a co-écrit et édité le principal manuel d' études cinématographiques The Cinema Book pour le British Film Institute (BFI). De 1985 à 1994, elle a été rédactrice en chef adjointe et collaboratrice des magazines BFI Monthly Film Bulletin et Sight and Sound , avant de devenir maître de conférences à l' Université d'East Anglia . En 1998, elle a été nommée première professeure de cinéma et médias européens à l' Université de Southampton .
Depuis sa retraite en 2006, elle continue de publier des livres et des articles sur l'histoire et la culture de l'image en mouvement. En 2007, elle a créé le blog de campagne indépendant bfiwatch pour suivre les développements au BFI, et elle a étendu son travail à la vidéographie savante.
